Namibia Energy Institute
The Namibia Energy Institute (NEI) is an energy research and development institute that contributes to Namibia’s development by linking energy research, technology, policy and education to the needs of Government and industry. Thus, it comprehensively addresses the national socio-economic development imperatives, initiatives and programmes to create sustainable energy solutions for Namibia through training and capacity building, research and development, providing advisory services towards policy formulation and establishing regulatory frameworks, project and contract management.
By addressing key socio-economic imperatives and initiatives, NEI pioneers sustainable energy solutions through a multifaceted approach encompassing training, capacity building, research and development, advisory services, policy formulation, and regulatory framework establishment. The Institute comprises of the following four distinct centres: 1) Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency; 2) Centre for Electricity Supply; 3) Centre for Oil and Gas; and 4) Centre for Nuclear Science.
Director
The Institute seeks a dynamic, energetic individual with strategic leadership and administrative capabilities. This position spans a performance-based five-year term.
Requirements
A relevant, internationally recognised Master’s Degree (NQF 9) in Engineering, Science, or a related field. A Business qualification (post-graduate training/course(s)) and/or a PhD qualification will be a distinct advantage. Must have ten (10) years of relevant experience in a similar field of which five (5) years were at the middle management level. A minimum of three (3) years experience in Energy Management with a solid background in Research and/or Product Development and a strong interest in commercialising technologies experience. Substantive experience in managing research project finances, coupled with experience handling research grants and contracts in the realm of Higher Education, is vital. Demonstrated proficiency in business planning, project costing, and pricing experience.
Experience implementing or leading changes in working initiatives, improved reporting, and services. Knowledge of policy and regulatory environment; national and international networking. Excellent communication, report writing and computer skills. Proficiency in energy simulation and modelling tools. Extensive experience in training and capacity building accompanied by strategic, administrative, problem-solving, and time management skills. Sound knowledge of local and global energy scenarios and experience in total quality and project management; and capacity to collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
Job Description
Lead the development of the Institutes’s turnaround strategic and business plans aligned with the University’s strategic plan and trending international areas of interest. Integrate leading practices for the core functions, in particular training and capacity building; research, innovation and product development; policy formulation and establishing regulatory frameworks; project management, and technical advisory services. Spearhead the development of grants/contract research or capital proposals/propositions; foster synergy across different sectors within Namibia’s energy landscape. Must be instrumental in communicating optimal technology transfer, commercialisation practices and the growth of entrepreneurial ventures, product development, and public and private investments. Support the energy industry—emphasising Green Hydrogen—by shaping policies, regulatory instruments, and spearheading surveys and consultancies. Communicate and promote the Institute’s vision, profile and research contributions, both nationally and internationally.
