Salary scale : N$328,139 – N$392,158
Housing allowance : N$13,080 per annum
Transport allowance : N$7, 6 80 per annum
Minimum Requirements: An appropriate 4-year B. or B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Natural Resource
Management (Nature Conservation) or Environmental Biology at NQF Level 8 with at least 5
years’ working experience in plant taxonomy and systematics. A Masters qualification with
the understanding, practical knowledge and skill in plant taxonomy and systematics would
be an advantage. Proficient in herbarium management and curation; scientific
writing/publication; supervision of staff, mentoring and training, organizational
management/administration as well as a good knowledge of the Namibian flora is required.
Proven experience in management of MS Access and FoxPro databases, common statistical
packages used in taxonomic research and GIS applications. A valid driving license (Code B
/ BE) and experience in botanical fieldwork, project co-ordination and grant writing would
serve as an advantage.
Overall responsibilities:
The incumbent serves as Head of the Section and is responsible for the overall
management of the National Herbarium of Namibia and leading taxonomic research on
the flora of Namibia. This position will require field work in remote rural areas; the
capturing, analysis and management of data; the publication of research results, both
formally (peer-reviewed publications) and informally (presentations to the general public,
popular-scientific publications, amongst other) as well as mentoring of staff and students.
Input to institutional budget and supervision of staff will be required. Liaison with national
and international stakeholders will be an integral part of this position.
