ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANT GRADE 12 – Oshana Regional Council

You typically need a Grade 12 certificate with passes in English, Mathematics, and Biology or Physical Science. Many employers also prefer or require a diploma or certificate in Environmental Health from institutions like the University of Namibia or the Namibia University of Science and Technology. Registration with the Health Professions Council of Namibia is often required or highly advantageous.

Daily tasks include conducting health inspections of food premises, water sources, and sanitation facilities in communities. You will collect samples for laboratory testing, educate the public on hygiene practices, and assist in disease outbreak investigations. Documentation and reporting to senior environmental health officers are also core responsibilities.

Employers in Namibia, particularly government ministries and local authorities, expect punctuality, respect for hierarchy, and community engagement skills. You will often work in both office settings and field conditions, including rural areas with limited infrastructure. Proficiency in English and local languages like Oshiwambo or Afrikaans is highly valued for effective public communication.

With experience and further education, you can advance to Environmental Health Officer, Senior Inspector, or Regional Coordinator positions. Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health opens doors to management roles in the Ministry of Health and Social Services or municipal health departments. Some professionals also transition into occupational health or consultancy work.

Government and large municipal employers usually provide medical aid contributions, pension schemes through the Government Institutions Pension Fund, and annual leave of 20-30 days depending on years of service. Field work often includes travel allowances and subsistence payments. Private sector benefits vary by employer and may include performance bonuses.

Monitor vacancies on the Government of Namibia portal, local authority websites, and newspapers like The Namibian and New Era. Employers prioritize candidates with practical field experience, strong communication skills, and demonstrated commitment to public health. Ensure your application includes certified copies of qualifications, a detailed CV, and references from academic or professional supervisors.
