TEACHER E

You must hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree or a relevant undergraduate degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), both accredited by the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA). Additionally, registration with the Teaching Council of Namibia (TCN) is mandatory before commencing employment in public or accredited private schools.

A Teacher E typically teaches 20–28 contact hours per week across assigned subjects and grades, prepares lesson plans aligned with the Namibian National Curriculum, and participates in learner assessments, parent-teacher meetings, and school-based professional development. You’ll also contribute to extracurricular activities and may support remedial teaching or inclusive education initiatives as required by your school’s context.

Namibian schools emphasise respect for authority, community engagement, and cultural responsiveness — especially when working with diverse ethnic and linguistic groups across regions. Punctuality, adherence to Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MEAC) guidelines, and active participation in school governance structures (e.g., SMT, PTAs) are strongly expected and routinely observed in both urban and rural settings.

With experience and further qualifications (e.g., Honours, Master’s, or TCN-accredited leadership training), you can progress to Teacher D, then C, B, and A levels — each requiring formal promotion through the MEAC’s Teacher Career Pathway framework. Some educators move into roles such as Head of Department, Deputy Principal, or School Principal, while others pursue curriculum development or inspectorate positions within MEAC or regional education offices.

Public school teachers are covered under the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and receive 30 days’ annual leave, 10 days’ sick leave per year, and maternity/paternity leave as per the Labour Act and Public Service Regulations. Medical aid is not automatically provided but many educators join voluntary schemes like NAMFED or private providers; some private schools offer partial medical aid contributions as part of their employment package.

Applications for public schools are submitted via the MEAC’s central recruitment portal during official vacancy cycles, while private schools advertise independently — often requiring certified copies of qualifications, TCN registration proof, police clearance, and referee letters. Employers prioritise TCN registration, classroom experience (especially in underserved areas), subject specialisation alignment, and demonstrated commitment to inclusive, learner-centred pedagogy rooted in Namibian contexts.
