Typically need a National Certificate in Motor Mechanics (NQF level 4) or equivalent trade qualification, plus a valid driver’s license. Many employers also require a trade test certification from the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) or a recognized automotive body. Practical experience of 2–3 years in vehicle maintenance is often expected.

Day-to-day duties include diagnosing mechanical faults, performing routine servicing, repairing engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems on a variety of vehicles. You will also be responsible for ordering parts, maintaining workshop safety standards, and completing job cards accurately. Collaboration with senior mechanics and adherence to manufacturer service schedules is common.

In Namibian workshops, punctuality, teamwork, and a strong emphasis on safety are highly valued; employers expect mechanics to communicate clearly with supervisors and customers. The work environment can be physically demanding, often involving outdoor or semi‑covered bays, and flexibility to work shift patterns or overtime when needed. Respect for hierarchical structures and a willingness to mentor junior staff are also part of the local work culture.

After gaining experience as a Mechanic General L2, you can progress to a Senior Mechanic or Workshop Supervisor role, often after completing additional trade tests or supervisory training. Some technicians move into specialized areas such as diagnostics, fleet management, or become trainers at vocational colleges. Continuous professional development through short courses offered by institutions like the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) can accelerate advancement.

Full-time mechanics in Namibia usually receive statutory annual leave (minimum 24 working days), sick leave, and family responsibility leave as per the Labour Act. Employers commonly provide medical aid contributions or access to a company health scheme, and pension or provident fund contributions are standard. Additional benefits may include tool allowances, uniform subsidies, and overtime pay where applicable.
