A minimum of Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science is commonly required, along with a valid Namibian driver’s licence. Practical training through a recognised technical institution (e.g., NTA Level 4 in Electrical Engineering or ICT) or on-the-job apprenticeship with a licensed telecom provider is highly valued. Some employers may require or support certification in fibre optic splicing (e.g., FOA CFOT) or safety training aligned with Namibian OSH Act standards.

Daily tasks include installing, testing, and troubleshooting fibre optic cables across urban and rural sites — often involving pole climbing, trenching, and working with OTDRs and power meters. Installers coordinate with site supervisors, customers, and municipal authorities, especially when accessing roads or communal land under Namibian local authority bylaws. Weather conditions and remote site access in regions like Otjozondjupa or Zambezi can affect daily schedules and require flexible planning.

Namibian telecom employers emphasise reliability, safety compliance, and strong interpersonal skills due to frequent customer-facing interactions in diverse communities. Punctuality, respect for communal land protocols, and adherence to local labour laws — including the Labour Act 11 of 2007 — are non-negotiable expectations. Teamwork is prioritised, especially during rollout projects in underserved areas where collaboration with local contractors and community liaisons is common.

Experienced installers can advance to roles such as Field Supervisor, Fibre Network Technician, or Trainer within larger providers like Paratus or MTC. Further growth may involve specialisation in network design, project coordination, or transitioning into vendor management with additional NTA-accredited short courses. Some pursue entrepreneurship by registering as accredited fibre installation contractors under the Namibian Communications Commission (NCC) framework.

Full-time roles usually include at least 20 days annual leave, sick leave per the Labour Act, and participation in a registered pension fund (e.g., NAPF or private schemes). Medical aid is commonly provided through group schemes like NAMAF or Medshield, though coverage levels vary by employer. Overtime and hazard allowances may apply for weekend or high-risk installations, subject to collective agreements or company policy.
