CNNC Rössing Uranium operates one of the world’s longest-running open-pit uranium mines, located in the Namib Desert near Arandis in Namibia’s Erongo Region. The mine began production in 1976 and has been a significant contributor to Namibia’s economy through employment, taxes, and export earnings. In 2019, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) acquired a majority shareholding in Rössing Uranium Limited, making it part of the CNNC group while continuing operations under Namibian law. The company produces uranium oxide, which is exported for use in nuclear power generation worldwide. Rössing remains one of Namibia’s largest private-sector employers and a key player in the country’s mining sector.
