Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications and certifications are typically required for a Mine Surveyor role at Rosh Pinah Zinc in Namibia?
A Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or Mining Engineering from a recognised institution is essential; registration with the Namibian Institute of Surveyors (NIS) is strongly preferred. Candidates must also hold a valid Namibian Class B driver’s licence and demonstrate competency in surveying software such as Leica Geo Office or Surpac, commonly used in Namibian mining operations.
What does a typical day look like for a Mine Surveyor at Rosh Pinah Zinc?
Daily tasks include underground and surface surveying to monitor excavation progress, setting out drill patterns and boundaries, updating mine plans, and verifying ore/waste volumes using total stations and GNSS equipment. Surveyors often work closely with geologists and production teams, and may rotate between office data processing and fieldwork in varying shifts, including weekends, as per Namibian mining operational schedules.
How does the local work culture and professional expectations differ for Mine Surveyors in Namibia compared to other countries?
Namibian mining workplaces emphasise respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and strong interpersonal communication — especially when collaborating across multilingual teams (e.g., English, Oshiwambo, Afrikaans). Safety compliance is non-negotiable, aligned with the Mines and Minerals Act and NAMFISA regulations, and surveyors are expected to actively participate in daily safety briefings and hazard identification processes.
What realistic career progression paths exist for Mine Surveyors in Namibia’s mining sector?
Entry-level surveyors often advance to Senior Mine Surveyor or Survey Team Leader roles after 3–5 years of proven field and reporting competence. With further experience and leadership training, opportunities open up for positions such as Survey Manager or cross-functional roles in mine planning or technical services — particularly with employers supporting internal development through programmes accredited by the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA).
What standard benefits can a Mine Surveyor expect from employers like Rosh Pinah Zinc in Namibia?
Employers typically provide statutory benefits including annual leave (21 days), sick leave, maternity/paternity leave per the Labour Act, and mandatory contributions to the Namibian Social Security Commission (NSSC). Most established mining companies also offer private medical aid schemes, pension or retirement annuity plans, and housing or transport allowances — subject to individual employment contracts and collective bargaining agreements.
How should I apply for a Mine Surveyor position in Namibia, and what do employers specifically look for in candidates?
Applications are usually submitted via company websites or recruitment portals like Namibia Jobs or LinkedIn, and must include certified academic transcripts, NIS registration proof (if applicable), and a detailed CV highlighting Namibian mining site experience. Employers prioritise candidates with hands-on surveying experience in underground zinc or base-metal environments, familiarity with Namibian mining legislation, and demonstrated adherence to safety and quality assurance protocols.
