**Job Title:** Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Development)
**Role Purpose:**
* The Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Development) is the Vice Chancellor’s Chief Advisor in research, innovation and development matters.
* His/her functions will strategically complement that of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), in order to provide efficiency, effectiveness, and high quality service delivery to the university community and the Namibian public at large.
* The successful candidate will assist the Vice Chancellor in fostering UNAM’s innovative research and connecting it to the industry for product development and socio-economic upliftment of the Namibian society.
* This position requires a very high degree of independent judgment. Ability to solve complex problems is key to success in this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing leadership on the development and implementation of Research, Innovation and Development strategy;
- Coordinating the institutional research framework and being responsible for the leadership and management of Research, Innovation and Development;
- Playing a leading role in the development of policies and procedures for the implementation of the University’s Research Strategy, including the dissemination of research results, commercialization and technology transfer policies as well as those policies dealing with intellectual property rights and patenting, identification and provision of support to research spin-offs and commercial development;
- Development of research programmes and harnessing platforms for research income and achievements of research targets;
- Alignment of faculty-based research agendas and university research institutes to strategic planning and financing models;
- Positioning the university’s effective response to 21st century challenges to national priorities as well as global initiatives, including the identification, development and maintenance of strategic research and commercial partnerships;
- Contextualising the University’s internationalization to enhance the University’s international research profile, activity and reputation;
- Ensuring that the University’s research infrastructure, IT systems and business development expertise can exploit opportunities and sustain its competitive edge as well as opportunities brought by the fourth industrial revolution and
- Ensuring the delivery of support to postgraduate and post-doctoral early career researchers and development/subscribing to appropriate mechanisms in order to monitor the university, including internal and external impact thereof.
Requirements
- A strong academic background, which is inclusive of being in possession of a Ph.D. degree from a recognized university;
- Be at the rank of full Professor and have extensive experience in university teaching, research, publication and industry collaboration.
- Strong academic track record in multidisciplinary research, including proven record of working in development research and project-based activities;
- At least 14 years in a senior management capacity;
- Experience and profile commensurate with senior leadership role at university level;
- Ability to contribute to institutional policy and integration of national policies across all major issues facing a university that aspires to become a top-ranked R&D intensive university;
- Broad knowledge of national development challenges;
- Ability to provide leadership on research policy, intellectual property rights (IPR) and innovation domain including technology transfer and commercialization;
- Proven record of networking with strategic partners and fundraising and securing large scale research funding and
- Excellent negotiations skills, written and oral communication skills, including the ability to craft complex messages for diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of regional and international research frameworks
