Anchor is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Namibian citizen with experience in the identification of invertebrate species to lead our team in Windhoek, Namibia. We are looking for someone with a broad range of interests and a willingness to learn new skills and work within a multidisciplinary team, starting as soon as possible.
Key Responsibilities
- Co-ordination and management of staff in the processing of benthic samples in our Namibian-based laboratory to meet required deadlines and quality standards.
- Procurement, implementation and management of diverse environmental assessments and monitoring projects in terrestrial, aquatic and marine habitats.
- Technical work assigned, including research, field work, statistical analysis, data collation, and write-up of projects, applying international best practice approaches and with citation of current published literature.
- Taxonomic identification work with the use of dichotomous keys/molecular techniques, and enumeration of benthic invertebrate species, focused mainly on benthic infauna and epifauna.
- Curatorship of existing species reference collection (adding to and maintaining samples).
- Survey design, organization, execution and management of field work (including ship-based survey work).
- Collaboration with team members of different disciplines.
Requirements
- At minimum a PhD in a relevant discipline or combination of disciplines.
- A strong background and publication record in aquatic/terrestrial (preferably marine) invertebrate (molecular and morphological) taxonomy.
- Demonstrable teaching experience.
- A valid passport to attend training courses and workshops in Cape Town, South Africa.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Strong quantitative skills, with postgraduate courses and/or proven ability in research design, advanced statistics, and proficiency in R and/or Statistica as well as Excel.
- Sea-going experience and/or small vessel skippers’ ticket and radio operator’s license.
