The SOS Lab Technician is a specialist position to support Technical Analysts and Representatives, condition monitors and PSSRs with fluid analysis for components by analyzing oil and coolant samples and managing the relevant SOS database. This includes interpretation of SOS results, preparation of analysis reports, handling of SOS technical queries from internal and external Customers and service quality delivery of interpretation analysis results.
Key Accountabilities:
- Perform sample preparation and analysis of received samples using appropriate tests and analysis standards e.g. TBN, TAN, Karl Fisher HPLC, etc.
Interpret critical fluid samples
Achievement of KPIs such as:
Turnaround time of processed samples
Growth of oil and coolant sample volumes and revenue
Retest time and frequency on samples
Own designated processes that include:
Compliance to ISO 9001 Quality System in the Lab
Development and maintenance of the chemical hygiene plan
Interpret fluid sample results and propose recommended action
Completion of required documentation e.g. oil billing form Review sample data and capturing of data into relevant systems e.g. Laboratory Information Management System
Utilization of Instrument Manager or similar systems to ensure accurate capturing, archive and maintenance of instrument data and history
Perform troubleshooting, calibration and maintenance of laboratory instruments
Validating laboratory instruments (performance control charts, performance testing programme)
Resolution of all SOS technical queries
Ensure quality of diagnostics are to OEM specifications and customer requirements
Liaise with vendors for lab supplies and advanced troubleshooting and maintenance of laboratory instruments
Perform lab inventory management activities e.g. monitoring of lab inventory and replenishment of required supplies
Liaise with customers and OEM representatives to align quality of interpretation
Using own judgement and technical expertise to:
Analyse fluid samples
Interpret fluid sample results and propose recommended action
Decide on severity ratings of fluids analyzed
Capture data on relevant databases and prepare SOS reports
Troubleshoot and maintain laboratory instruments
Manage and maintain SOS standard operating procedures and processes
Interrogate and advise on fluid analysis results
Quality of own work including all related administration
Qualifications & Experience:
Grade 12
Degree in Chemistry or related field, Engineering, Oil & Gas or Petrochemicals or Trade Certificate (Diesel or Heavy Earthmoving Mechanics) will be an added advantage
Certified Caterpillar SOS interpreter will be an added advantage
2 years administrative experience in a technical environment or industrial lab
3 years’ experience in SOS interpretation and fluid sample analysis
Working experience with SOS service manager
