Position: Senior Engineer: HVDC and FACTS

Primary Purpose of the job:

The incumbent Is expected to manage and lead the specialist functions and activities for the HVDC & FACTS devices section within NamPower’s Transmission Business Unit. As part of the overall function of the Wires Business Unit, the incumbent is expected to manage and operate specialist functions of the following devices in the NamPower Transmission system:

• FACTS devices (Auas SVC, Omburu SVC, filter banks at Omburu. filter bank at Otjlkoto, filter bank at Khan, all future filter banks, all future SVC’s/ STATCOMs or series compensation),
• HVDC (Zambezi Link Gerus- and Zambezi Converter stations and filter banks).

He/she will also actively participate in network integration of new Distributed Generation including development/updating of related specifications. The incumbent should ensure from the conception of various projects that the scope of work is finalised, approve designs, commissions assets, operates and maintain NamPower Transmission Standards and requirements.

Duties executed in co-operation with other business units and transmission sections, especially Transmission Capital Projects, Energy Trading, Engineering Services. Network Operations, System Operations. System Security and Planning, and others as required.

Interacts on a technical level to international suppliers and design engineers required for ongoing projects and with NamPower customers where interdependencies exist with regards to HVDC and/or FACTS devices’ interaction with customer equipment.
