The University of Namibia (UNAM) is the premier institution of Higher Learning in the country, whose key functions are in line with the standards of universities worldwide. It was established as a tertiary institution by an Act of Parliament in 1992, with its seat in Windhoek, Namibia. Its aims and objectives are to provide higher education, undertake research, to advance and disseminate knowledge, in order to contribute to the social and economic development of Namibia. The University Librarian is the strategic and administrative head of the university library system and the custodian of the stewardship policies that manage the use of the university’s physical and digital collection resources. The University Librarian provides strategic leadership to ensure the library system excels in providing support for teaching and learning, research and innovation at the University of Namibia. As such, the University Librarian supports the university in conducting impact research through referencing support services and locating resources. The University Librarian is responsible for the overall administration, human resource management and capacity building/development, and budget for the UNAM Libraries and UNAM Archives, and for the management and policy development for library services, operations, resources, physical facilities, infrastructure and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Curation of collections to support learning, teaching and research;
- Use and implementation of digitization tools and AI to enhance library services;
- Archiving and preservation of all university records, inclusive of sensitive, complex and/or confidential information;
- Supervision of Librarians across all UNAM campuses;
- Negotiating and implementing international cooperation initiatives;
- Benchmarking and setting standards of library customer service and
- Advise the institution on new library inventory needs by liaising with Faculties.
Requirements
- A PhD in library and information science from an accredited university;
- At least 10 years’ working experience in senior and leadership positions at Libraries of academic and/or research institutions;
- Strong academic background.
- Expert knowledge and experience with international library management systems;
- Knowledge and experience with the use of digitization tools and AI to enhance library services;
- Experience and thorough knowledge of current trends and best practices for university library management;
- Experience in international cooperation, financial administration;
- Experience in utilisation of digital library technologies open access platforms and project management;
- Knowledge of advanced technology and electronic information management;
- Understanding of the university and research environment, and the role of the library in support of the academic information needs of students, lecturers, and researchers;
- Experience in human resources management;
- Working in a Student-centered environment;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Excellent inter-personal relations;
- Experience with library standards such as Resource Description and Access (RDA), Machine-readable cataloging (MARC) and Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategy (PREMIS).
- Ability to collaborate across faculties, support curriculum development and engage in diverse academic communities.
