**Job Title:** General Manager
**Role Purpose:**
The General Manager is responsible for the success and contracted growth of the respective business units spread across multiple countries.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a large, geographically dispersed team (more than 500 employees), covering operations in at least four different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Manage strategy and operational excellence across the business.
- Take full responsibility for the P&L of the business.
- Manage the following Head of Departments: Commercial, Operations, Logistics, Customs, Route Security, Engineering workshops, Procurement, Stores, Human Resources, Health & Safety, Legal, Finance, IT, manufacturing, warehousing, and Projects.
- Propose market differentiation strategies to the Board.
- Engage with multiple stakeholders in an exceptionally complex operating environment.
Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of proven executive-level leadership experience, with the ability to motivate and lead a large, geographically dispersed teams (more than 500 employees), covering operations in at least four different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Specific exposure to import and export formalities on multiple different trade lane/ transport corridors.
- Comprehensive understanding of logistics, supply chain, drayage operations, port operations, bulk and breakbulk material handling, cross-border road freight, warehouse management, stevedoring, bond management, cargo repackaging, multi modal transshipment and vessel loading, will be verified in the interview process.
- Strong negotiation and relationship management skillsets. Extensive commercial exposure to freight forwarders, subcontractors, port authorities, mines & mining houses, government departments, customs, and shipping lines.
- Capable of engaging with multiple stakeholders in an exceptionally complex operating environment.
- Solid understanding of financial and tax management principles with the ability to interpret financial reports with actionable execution following on from the analysis.
- Experienced in risk management and compliance with local and international regulatory requirements.
- Strategic planning and foresight will need to be proven through extensive presentations to the Board, part of the interview process.
- Cognitive and Behavioural tests need to be completed and passed to required standards.
- Exposure to complex technological solutions and systems.
- Proven ability to inspire the pursuit of excellence across multiple business verticals, with examples.
- Proven success in growing EBITDA margins through the provision of actual project examples of balancing cost and revenue operations.
- Propose market differentiation strategies to the Board.
- Exposure to both established and startup logistics businesses a key requirement.
- Experienced in SHEQ Management systems and certifications with international Bureaus of Standards.
- Proven exposure to large and complex engineering projects and associated supply chain requirements.
- Ability to manage strategy and operational excellence across the business.
- Full responsibility for the P&L of the business.
- Experience in managing the following Head of Departments: Commercial, Operations, Logistics, Customs, Route Security, Engineering workshops, Procurement, Stores, Human Resources, Health & Safety, Legal, Finance, IT, manufacturing, warehousing and Projects.
- Willingness to work weekends and night shifts where required.
- Extensive inter-group company knowledge and understanding, know-how and goodwill.
- Required: 10 years of experience in Senior Management positions – extensive verifications part of interview process
- Required: Completed BSc/ BCom Honours Degree in Business Management or Logistics
- Required: Project Management & SHEQ Management qualifications
- Required: Master of Business Administration Degree
- Preferred: Additional Post Graduate qualification will be advantageous
- Preferred: Leadership qualification or certifications
- Preferred: Human Resources – Behavioural and Cognitive Analysis Certification
- Languages: English & Afrikaans.
