A 24-month research scholarship focused on carrying out original research on the demography of Welwitschia mirabilis populations using remote sensing and drone/UAV technology at the Gobabeb – Namib Research Institute.
Key Responsibilities
- You will carry out original research on demography of Welvitschia mirabilis populations at Gobabeb in the Namib Desert for the next 24 months (2 years).
- You will carry out image analysis acquired by remote sensing platforms to collect demographic data and analyse environmental variables to model demographic changes.
- You will carry out and assist with targeted collection, processing and storage of images from drone/UAV missions for your own research and to facilitate relevant future research.
- You will validate recently acquired drone/UAV survey data through field assessments.
- You familiarize visiting scientists and specialists with operational procedures for operating drones/UAVs in the Namib Desert.
- You educate visitors on remote sensing applications and how it improves understanding of desert ecosystems qand their plant populations.
- You share your knowledge and skills and train students in remote sensing essentials.
Requirements
- You are a Namibian that completed an honours degree in science, or equivalent, and desire to register as a Master degree student at a southern African university.
- You studied geography, botany, forestry or environmental science with considerable emphasis on remote sensing, drone/UAV image processing and/or plant demography.
- You wish to acquire specialised research skills and are interested demography of plant populations and the application of drone/UAV remote sensing in plant ecology or forestry.
- You are familiar with sources of Earth Observation satellite data and processing and analytical tools for collecting data from remote sensing images.
- You have a passion to do original research, learn new skills and explore new horizons.
- You are meticulous, independent and self-motivated.
- You understand or wish to learn about bioinformatics and the processing of large datasets.
