The Prosecutor-General holds the constitutional mandate to prosecute criminal proceedings in the name of the Republic, to conduct and defend criminal appeals before the superior courts, to exercise oversight and direction over the conduct of criminal proceedings by delegated officials, and to exercise such related functions as prescribed by law.

Requirements
- Legal qualifications that would entitle the applicant to practise in all courts of Namibia (these are stipulated in the Legal Practitioners Act, 1995).
- The applicant should, by virtue of his or her experience, conscientiousness and integrity be a fit and proper person to be entrusted with the responsibilities of the Office of the Prosecutor-General.
- Namibian citizenship.
- Admission as a legal practitioner in Namibia.
- A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in criminal litigation, including at least five (5) years in the superior courts, of which experience may include the conduct of criminal proceedings on delegation in terms of Article 88(2)(d) of the Namibian Constitution; and/or A minimum of fifteen (15) years’ experience as a legal practitioner in the superior courts with a bias in public law litigation.
- Proven track record of being able to act with integrity and impartiality.
- Must be prepared to personally prosecute in criminal trials and argue or defend appeals in appropriate cases.
- Knowledge of the Namibian socio-economic context and government programmes.
- Knowledge of the constitutional relationship between the Prosecutor-General and the Attorney-General.
- A commitment to desist from accepting or holding any other office of profit and not to receive remuneration for any service rendered, save for such remuneration, benefits, allowances, and privileges to which the Prosecutor-General is entitled in terms of applicable legislation.
- Breadth of legal knowledge, particularly in areas that interface with criminal law and the functions assigned to the Prosecutor-General under applicable legislation, including company law, the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, 2004 (POCA), international cooperation in criminal matters, extradition, human rights law, and the regulatory framework governing criminal investigations by state agencies.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities.
- A clear and demonstrable vision to improve the Office of the Prosecutor-General and the criminal justice system.
