DESCRIPTION
The Ongava Research Centre (ORC) is searching for an experienced scientist to join its team and
welcomes applications for the position of Resident Scientist with expertise in mammal ecology and
behaviour, with a focus on carnivores.
About the Ongava Research Centre
ORC’s goal is to facilitate excellent research and advanced learning that contributes understanding
and information to the advantage of Namibian science, the management of natural resources, and
improvements in livelihoods. ORC seeks leading scientists to achieve these goals. By linking them
with committed students, we expect the production of high-quality research, and for students to
gain valuable experience, motivation and inspiration from their mentors and colleagues.
The successful applicant would fit the following profile:
• Be an established researcher with interests and experience in mammal behaviour and spatial
ecology, who has a PhD and a record of 20 or more publications in international peerreviewed journals.
• Demonstrate expertise in the fields of prey-predator and predator-predator interactions
(e.g. landscape of fear, competition-facilitation), habitat selection, movement ecology and
animal population monitoring.
• Excellent skills in statistical analyses such as generalised and/or mixed linear models,
spatially explicit capture-recapture, resources/step selection functions, home range and
movement analyses.
• Have experience in co-ordinating large scale research projects as well as a proven track
record of international collaborations.
• Is self-motivated and able to live and work in places with minimal modern conveniences and
support.
• Demonstrated capacity to work alone and in large international team settings.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Preference will be given to Namibian Citizens/Permanent Residents or people in possession
of a valid work permit.

Experience in the following would be advantageous:
• Data management, including camera trap data
• High proficiency in relevant software (R, QGIS, etc.)
• Student supervision (MSc level upward)
• Extensive field experience in the following: telemetry, camera trapping and behavioural
observations
• Confident interpersonal communication skills (the ability to speak German, French, Italian
or Spanish would be an added value)
• Competence in offroad driving
